When Uncle Howard was coaching, Jeff loved to attend his camps and the games. He thanked the committee for the honor and said he was proud to join his uncle, Howard Hayes, who was inducted into the Ring of Honor last year with the Surry Central 1965 championship football team. Jeff sent a letter to the Hall saying he could not attend the induction because his wife was ill. He finished his career with a respectable 38.2 yards per punt. In 1987, Jeff played in two games for the Dolphins before retiring. He tried six other fakes in his career and averaged 17 yards a try. This wasn’t the only time that Jeff faked out the defense for good yardage. Jeff sprinted down the field 61 yards for the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter. “With the defense sucked in, Hayes ran around one player and surprised everyone with his speed.” “The Steelers were looking to block the punt,” told a story in the Los Angeles Times. It showed in a game against the Bengals’ bitter rivals, the Pittsburgh Steelers, Oct. ![]() It was during this season that he had one of his career highlights.Īt 5-foot-11 and 175 lbs., Jeff was much smaller than the guys around him, but still had good athleticism. In 1986, Jeff joined the Cincinnati Bengals. In the first two seasons, Washington made the Super Bowl, beating the Dolphins 27-17 in 1982, then losing to Marcus Allen and the Raiders in 1983.ĭuring his time with the Redskins, Jeff punted 211 times for a 39.0 average. That punting average caught the eye of the Redskins, where he would play for his first four years. He also showed off a powerful leg with 50 punts for a whopping 50.2 yards per try. He attempted only two field goals, making one of two, but was a stellar 49 of 50 on extra points. Then in his senior year, Jeff was asked to handle both kicking and punting chores. He also was called upon once for a punt and came through for 34 yards.Īs a junior, Jeff struggled a little on field goals, going 7 for 16, but made 34 of 36 PATs. In 1979, Jeff made 7 of 13 field goals and all 37 extra points for 58 total points. He took over the starting spot as a sophomore. Jeff handled kicking and punting duties at Elkin, then signed with UNC as a kicker. Jeff Hayes starred at Elkin High School and UNC before getting to the Super Bowl as a rookie with the Washington Redkins.
